We all tend to organise our emails, Facebook groups, LinkedIn connections and so on, it is only obvious that Twitter would launch a feature to help the more organised users in the world.
In 2009, ‘Twitter Lists’ launched and since then they have given the opportunity to organise your social media usage, making content easier to find and more relevant to your search.
Setting one up is simple. All you need to do is click on your profile icon in the top right hand side of your screen and select ‘Lists’ on the drop down tab.
When you click “Create List” on the right, you’ll have the option to name your list, add a description and choose to make it private or public. The more information you fill in, the more organised you’ll be.
You can then add people to your list by searching their username or adding them directly from their profile. To view tweets from specific lists, you can access this from the ‘Lists’ tab on your profile. This helps filter the relevant content you are wanting to search for from the irrelevant, saving time and effort.
Why are Twitter Lists important for a business?
The feature helps you find new people and organise the ones you already follow on twitter. In comparison this is twitter's version of a Facebook ‘groups’ feature. The lists offer the ability to bunch together users in different categories so you see content relevant to what you are looking for. For example, you may choose to create a list of ‘lifestyle bloggers’. Adding these users to your list will allow you to see content they have created and you won’t be coming across information deemed irrelevant to your search anymore.
So what is the point in this, especially from a business point of view? There are several reasons as to why Twitter Lists are important for a business. For an influencer advertising agency, these lists can become particularly handy when gathering new influencers, categorizing your influencers, organising your clients and so forth.
Interacting with influencers, to see the new, the old, the successful and the not so successful is the golden key to your marketing initiatives. Tracking your best influencers will help you see what content they create and share on other platforms and will allow you to better connect them with upcoming campaigns more suitable to their content creation. As stated before, it also allows you to block out any other noise (irrelevant content) that isn’t necessary in your research.

With Twitter Lists, you can become super undercover by following what your competitors are posting and sharing without them knowing. You just have to make your list private and they’ll never know. Keeping on Top of Topical Threads
This can help you research the trends within pop culture that could advance you in your industry. For example in an advertising industry, linking campaigns with topical threads in society often proves successful. Following newsmakers can also be good as it can serve as direction to portray what you shouldn’t connect campaigns with - this generally relates to bad news.
Engage with Employees
Keep in touch with your co-workers. See what they’re interested in and passionate about. Someday this information will be useful but there is also no harm in getting to know who you work with a little bit better.
List People who Retweet you
Here you can engage with them by retweeting their posts, as they do yours. This offers a win-win situation by encouraging them to share more of your stuff so you gain more exposure.
Maintain Customer Relationships
Follow your influencers and your clients. Retweet their posts because maintaining a customer relationship is important. It can be seen as a supportive system. This can link up with point number six.
