The Sleek Avenue | Influencer Talks

Chosen as 2016’s Mercedes Benz NZ Style Icon, Aki from The Sleek Avenue epitomises “sleek”. From cascading branches along the historically cobblestoned Elliot Street, to self portraits in front of Queen Street’s busiest intersection, Aki’s street style continuously follows her “never dress for the occasion, dress for yourself” motto. When Aki walks in the room, there’s an identical feeling to what can be imagined when scrolling her Instagram. With a coat over her shoulders and an enviously confident down-hill-in-heels stride, Aki is a breath of fresh air in the New Zealand fashion game. With the Louis Vuitton and Louboutins comes realness, an influenced humility that occurs only in the best of souls. She’s one to watch, and to double-tap. We spoke to her to see what it truly is that The Sleek Avenue is achieving.

On what The Sleek Avenue is about…
My personal style and my art direction/photography work, including self portraits. I am a picture person and I love capturing beautiful things, in the way my eyes see them. For me, a picture simply tells so much.

On what’s the most rewarding part…
Making ideas come to life. I came from a fashion advertising background and I always have so many ideas floating around in my mind. With a creative platform like The Sleek Avenue, I have every reason to execute and share them with the world. The most rewarding part for me is when people understand or appreciate what I created. I remember I did a self-portrait in front of a STOP sign to showcase an outfit. The designer mailed me a few days later and thought that was clever. The whole collection is a traffic-stopper indeed.

On where she’s taking it…
I want to inspire, to bring smiles, to motivate, and sometimes to make the world seem better than it is. My Dad used to say: “Humans are like candles, we have the power to light up the whole room and bring brightness to those who needs it”. I hope I have a hand in that.

On her most proud The Sleek Avenue moment…
When my favourite international fashion designer acknowledged my work. I’m a big fan of this London label called Self Portrait (it’s not intentional) and I did a photo with one of his lemon coloured dresses, along with a line: “When life throws you lemons, make a beautiful dress”. He replied with 3 yellow hearts instantly! I had been staring at that post for days!

On how she measures success…
Success is difficult for me to measure to be honest. However I like to set creative challenges for myself, as I feel like I still have a lot to learn. There’s no such thing as over-skilled or over-educated so I just want to keep pushing my limits, and see where it takes me.
